There were fewer manufacturers in this 1980 season. However, Fiat fielded five 131 Abarths and a Ritmo. Talbot is satisfied with a single Sunbeam Lotus, for Fréquelin.

The two Opel Ascona 400 are for Kulläng and Kleint. The line-up is completed by the semi-private holdings of Vatanen (Ford Escort RS1800), Mikkola (Porsche 911 Alméras) and Darniche (Stratos Chardonnet). After a (short) fanfare start, Alèn (Fiat) goes off the road. Röhrl (Fiat) then took control and never let go. It will be the first of his four victories at the wheel of four different cars.

In ninth place in the general classification, it is an amateur driver who stands out. Alain Coppier enters the Top 10 with his Porsche 911 SC, winning at the same time group 3, that of Series Grand Touring cars.

Patrick Lauber did everything possible to finish his replica of this car on time. At the cost of hard work, he managed the feat of being at the start of his first Alsace Rallye Festival by finishing the last works a few hours from taking the road to Alsace.
