In response to the Ford Capri and other Opel Mantas, Renault presented its R17 in 1971. Developed on the basis of the R12 family, it innovates by welcoming in its TS version the 1565 cc engine of the R12 Gordini equipped for the first time with electronic injection. In 1975 the TS will become Gordini.In 1974, Renault marketing asked the same questions as its Lancia counterpart and decided to enter the R17 in rallies to defend its colours. A retirement from the Safari Rally was followed by a victory at the Press on Regardless in incredible conditions, the event being shortened following a few chases with the local sheriffs. At the Tour de Corse, the Régie’s coupé fell into line and finished 8th.
In 1975, the Renault team concentrated its energy on the Alpine A310 and Jean-François Piot's fifth place in the Monte Carlo Rally was the only highlight of the season.
After entering their replica of the 1974 Tour de Corse version in the 2011 and 2012 Rallye Monte Carlo Historique, the two Jean-Marc, Fritz and Fluck are now criss-crossing the roads of the Alsace Rallye Festival as neighbors.
