Yesterday : Ari VATANEN / David RICHARDS - Rallye de l’Acropole 1981

In 1981, Ford was present in the World Rally Championship with David SUTTON’s private team. With the help of Rothmans, he fielded Ari VATANEN who had won his first world championship rally the previous year along with his second British Championship title.
The start of the season is difficult: after 5 rallies, it is only twelfth in the Championship, 25 points behind Guy FREQUELIN. A victory at the Acropolis and two straight wins in Brazil and Finland put him back in the title race. But after an abandonment in Ivory Coast the chances of coronation seem to fade away. He arrived at the start of the RAC with an 8-point deficit over the Talbot pilot. But REQUELIN retired in the 53rd of 65 stages, and his second place behind Hannu MIKKOLA's Audi Quattro earned Ari VATANEN the title.

Built in 2014 by Thomas Schulz, this Ford Escort BDA is the exact replica of Ari Vatanen's car during the 1981 World Rally Championship. The Schulz / Kleinwächter crew took part in three gravel rallies, with, between others, the RAC Rally of England.
Jürgen and Sina Carabin acquired this car in March 2016. They took part in Rallye Hessen (Slowly Sideways) and Group B Rallyelegende in Austria before entering the Vosges Rallye Festival, an event they have been loyal to ever since.
