From 1960 to 1990, the Zwickau-based Trabant works department named “Werksteam Sachsenring” entered their two-stroke Trabants even on international rallies such as the 1000 Lakes in Finland or the Acropolis in Greece. With only 600 cc and 35 to 45 bhp (65 bhp for the 800 ccm engine) they had no chance for top results when competition again the supercars from Western Europe but the Trabants could at least prove their reliability. While Heinz Galle retired in Finland, the best works Trabant driven by Frank Ficker finished 62nd overall.
The father and son team of Mark and Olivier Hermans had the idea to drive a rally car which is not seen very often in Belgium. Thus they sold their Ford Escort and bought a 1963 Trabant. In 2011, they began to restore the car, a project which took them three years. Now they have a very nice copy of the works Trabants used on the 1000 Lakes Rally of 1986.
